Making the American Heart Association’s Power To End Stroke campaign easier to understand through information design, illustration and a visual story centered on community.

The Challenge

The American Heart Association needed a clear way to communicate Power To End Stroke's purpose, volunteer opportunities and impact. We collaborated with Pamela Garmon Johnson, National Senior Vice-President, Healthy Living & NextGen Programs, whose approach put community first: "It's about having a powerful partnership and meeting people on their own ground."

Our Idea

Give the campaign a visual story people could enter at any point. We organized the information around three questions: What is Power To End Stroke? Who makes it happen? What does it achieve? Where paragraphs explain ideas in sequence, infographics let readers scan, compare and connect information through scale, color and placement.

The Work

We chose bold, rounded sans serif type to make headings distinct and approachable. Smaller body copy carried the detail while handwritten accents added a personal touch. Illustrations of faces and reaching hands in varied skin tones connected the program's facts and figures to the people behind them.

Color & Layout

Warm orange, gold and olive tones brought energy to a textured cream background. We used color to group information and direct attention, with cards, charts and large numbers creating a clear reading order. The layout balanced detail with space, giving readers an overview of the program and places to pause for more information.

The Result

“The infographic Birk Creative designed for us outlines all of our priorities and is a great way to tell our story. It's almost like an elevator speech because you can quickly pull out goals, focal areas, and projected outcomes.”
